Shanghai china?

is shanghai a good place to live in? my husband and i are planning to move to shanghai, china (where he received a good job offer) and start our own family there.what about bird flu or the language barrier? or the crime rate there?have anyone of you tried moving to china or to any foreign city and start over? i would appreciate any opinion, tips, or advice you might have.thanks in advance!|||It will be quite a good place to live in. but like any major cities in the world, it can be quite stressful. I'm a Singaporean living in China, beijing. I think it's quite a big jump for me as in Singapore most thing are written in english, and i was very used to reading english and writing in english. But luckily for me, it did not take me too long to get use to it as after all Singapore is basically a chinese country, and we all speak chinese too. Bird flu, i don't think so. lol. As for language barrier, it won't be a barrier if you are a tourist, but if you are going to live there, it might become a barrier. But fret not, people who have more education should be able to converse in english with you. However there are plenty who can't speak english, but basic 'how much', 'five', should still be ok, if it's not too far off city. If you can't speak chinese, of course you will be of disadvantage if you are planning to work. When you come here, you'll realise those foreigners(japanese, koreans, americans, etc.) who are living here mostly able to speak Chinese. So i think you'll need to learn at least some basic Chinese. Don't worry, people there are very friendly and hospitable, they will be glad to help.If you are worrying about shanghainese, while I'm in shanghai on business trip, i have NOT met anyone who can't speak Chinese. by the way, China is a country that 'guan xi' (relationship that you can use to pull strings) is important. and they like to invite people to their house to have dinner, and they won't be too happy to if you decline. lol. Don't go empty handed if you are invited over. And if you are all eating out, at the end of dinner, everyone will be like fighting(not literally) to pay the bill. lol.crime rate are relatively low here. only petite crimes such as pick pockets. just be careful, you'll be ok. and try to look out for xinjiang people and as they contribute to the high pick pocket rates. However the most important thing I'm concern about is children's education. I really don't wish my kids to go through such hard education system in China. Pre U is seriously scary, Monday to Friday is from 8am to 9.30 PM, and Saturday is from 8am to 6pm, this carry out for 3 years. However, it is very difficult for children to enter local university if they are enrolled into international schools. My children are still toddlers, so i always ponder about this issue.Hope I helped! :)Good Luck! :)|||ofcourse china is a good city ,,there's nothing u need to worry abt bird flu or any other disease, though u have heard of it much more.in case of language i find myself most difficult language in the world and its true .i have already being living here for almost 3 year and i can somehow able to communicate with people .hey in sanghai,,i dont think there will any kind of crime you should worry of and if you are foreigner then dont ever think of that coz china government is very strict .i had think of it but by my profession i would not have any comfort as in my country..actually i am medical student in zhengzhou and i am in third year and there is one year left for me to return to my country .but by sure i can truly tell you that its much more good in sanghai to live .sanghai is very expensive sity and by your salary if you can manage its very good to liveand another thing if you are from western country you will find teaching job with handsfull salary...this much for you and if you want to know more contact me...|||Please don't worry about Bird Flu, you literallly have to sleep with the diseased chickens in order to get it and when was the last time a case was in the news? June? You'll find the most English spoken in China in Shanghai so language should be OK. There are plenty of short courses at the universities there if you want to learn. To be honest, go for a holiday for a couple of weeks and see what you think. It gets crazily hot in the summer but there's air con everywhere. So try first and see what you think.|||Shanghai is....not a place I'd want to live. In the first place, in order to communicate effectively, you'd have to learn both standard Mandarin AND the local Shanghainese dialect (which is completely different). The weather is extremely hot in the summertime, and extremely humid as well. And in my experience (a lot of Chinese will concur), people in Shanghai are snobby and think they are better than the rest of China.|||Shanghai would be a good starter city for someone moving to China. It's a HUGE city so there's a lot of foreign influence. Plus if you got what you consider a really good job offer then you'll be able to live like kings in China. I don't make that much money relative to the us and I live like a queen. It's fantastic. don't worry about the bird flu. As for the language barrier, it's there and there's no avoiding it. For the most part if you wanted to you could move to China and never learn chinese. I know a guy who's lived here for 7 years in the back waters of the country were no one speaks english and he barely knows any chinese, seriously. And in Shanghai you could get away with. As for the crime rate I feel a million times safer here than I ever did in the US. You have a lot more pickpockets and small crimes to worry about but people aren't allowed to have guns, you get in SERIOUS trouble if you have one and drugs are punishable by death in some cases. If you want to go to a new country to start over China is a great one to pick, the people are super friendly if you bust out chinese they get excited and they *want* to help you for the most part. There are exceptions but there always are anywhere. Shanghai is a huge modern city with lots of foreign food and a great metro system in place. And like I said your husband can work and you can get massages and shop all day, becaue nothing beats shopping in shanghai.|||I agree with Leona that Shanghai people are so arrogant. They think they are the elite among all the chinese people.Frankly, living in Shanghai is not a problem.just dont mind the shanghai people who are arrogant.in fact, you will also meet people who would be so kind to you.you have nothing to worry about bird flu or SARS.shanghai probably has the highest cost of living among all chinese cities but you also get the highest salary per capita.as for language, every chinese can speak Mandarin, you dont have to learn the shanghai dialect. in fact, a lot of shanghai people especially the younger generation cannot even speak shanghainese.and because shanghai is a very competitive city, most people have learned to speak english.I have been living in another city in china for 4 years but am planning to move to Beijing or Shanghai as well.i also had a shanghainese girlfriend for over a year so basically i have some understanding of shanghai behavior.|||Shanghai is just like NYC, but with a lower crime rate. You will run into a lot of new and exotic things. Of course, like other international cities, there are both bad and good neighborhoods in the city. Stay away from the bad districts and you will be trouble free. Chinese societies, including HK, Singapore and TW, are known for their low violent crime rate. Violent crimes towards foreigners are extremely rare. so no worry as long as you use your common sense. However, make sure you always have your belongs in your sight…As for Shanghai ppl, almost every Chinese ppl would tell you that local Shanghai-ers are arrogant. But things have changed a lot since more and more ppl are migrating to SH from other provinces. As SH being China's financial and hi-tech center, you will also meet the smarted group of Chinese there...so your experience with ppl will be quite mixed, just like in other international cities.|||interesting vedio about SH:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbA770WgT1U|||IT's a International Metropolis|||the local Shanghai tongue pronounces differently(quite) from the standand mandarin. But actually they are the same language and most citizens in Shanghai can speak both.|||I know a website for foreigners in China:http://www.foreignercn.comIt makes your life easier in China~Making more local friends, they are friendly~|||I've been here with my family for four years, with my children attending a local public school -- they're little, so they're now fluent in Chinese. For foreigners, the city is super safe -- my kids (now 10 and 12) take the city bus by themselves to school. I have no worries walking around at any time, day or night. I don't speak much Chinese at all -- it's possible to spend a lifetime in Shanghai, going to a different night club, restaurant, or social gathering every night, and never speak any Chinese. There are English-language magazines, websites, TV stations, schools, clubs, newspapers... it's the most cosmopolitan city in China. Also, official Chinese (Mandarin) is not the native language of local residents (they speak Shanghaiese). As a result, they're extremely forgiving if people speak Chinese with an accent or mangle the grammar and pronunciation. Get a local city guide with taxi directions in Chinese when you get here, and collect business cards of your favorite restaurants to show to drivers. Taxis are cheap, and I take them almost everywhere, but the subway is also clean and efficient. Buses are crowded during rush hour, but if you don't mind a little jostling, you can take public transport all around the city. The city is flat, so bike riding is easy, if you're prepared to weave around traffic and pedestrians. The air quality is not that great, though -- I had bronchitis a couple of times when I first got here. Make sure you get a recommendation for a good medical clinic (we use WorldLink, one of the best medical services in town). If you wear shoes 8 or above, or are average or more in height or width, bring plenty of shoes and clothing -- it will be hard to find sizes that fit here. On the plus side, however, you can get clothing custom-made very cheaply. An easy thing to do is to bring your favorite garment to a tailor and have them copy it in a variety of fabrics. Aside from that, you can get almost anything here, including most of the top US consumer brands when it comes to food and toiletries. (Blonde hair dye is trickier, though, as is shampoo for blonde hair. Bring extra.)Good luck!- Maria

Is there anyone Shanghainese? or have been to Shanghai recently. Please recommend something Chinese food and cuisine. And where to eat.|||I am Shanghaiese who don't live in Shanghai, so here are some more Shanghaiese food that I know of:- The "big blinding crab" from the lake next to Shanghai tastes sooooooooo goooooooooooood, but it is only available October/November and 90% of them are exported to Hong Kong. - Xiao Long Bao (soup dumpling) is one of the famous food original from Shanghai, but I was a little bit disappointed. My cousin brings me to one of the best Xiao Long Bao place (Wong Ka Sa - sounds). I can get the similar quality in New York with Joe's Shanghai. I searched the web, people saying the XIao Long Bao place inside the Shanghai City God Temple has even better Xiao Long Bao, but I did not have a chance to try it. (Expect to wait more than an hour in line. Some people said the food at the upper level of that restaurant tastes better, but more expensive.) - The vegetable bun tastes really great in Shanghai. (My Aunt bought them for me, I have no idea where to get them.) When I left Shanghai, I have 80 vegetable buns in my lugguage that I brought to my family in Hong Kong as gift. - The river shrimp is another famous Shanghaiese food. Cooked as "Dragon Well Tea Shrimp", "Red sauce river shrimp". You should be able to find this at any Shanghaiese restaurant in Shanghai. - Dragon well tea is famous in Shanghai area. (Suppose to be product of Hangzhou - a city about 2 hrs away from Shanghai by car.) - The yellow wine as "Daughter Red" are famous wine in Shanghai/ surrounding area. - The Kim Wah ham - It is Chinese ham that produced at a city close to Shanghai. Cooked food as "Honey (Kim Wah) Ham square" or any soup contain Kim Wah Ham.- Soy bean food as "Vegetable duck", "Vegetable chicken", "Dried tofu". They are very common food in Shanghai. Question about drinking water in China?

In Shanghai, I understand you cannot drink water from the tap or else you have to boil it.What brands of bottled water are safe and clean to drink in Shanghai?I only want serious answers to this question. If you don't know, don't answer.|||I drank about a dozen different brands in beijing with no problems...I remember one was called Wahaha. No matter what you get, just make sure it is sealed when you buy it and you should be fine. The reason not to drink the water is it can often be contaminated with bacteria, as they don't have the stringent filtering processes we do. If you boil your own water it is safe to drink as it kills the bacteria. This is what most chinese people do...sometimes you may even be served hot water to drink. Also, many hotels and such have water coolers where you can fill up an empty bottle with good filtered water.Also...boil the water you use to brush your teeth too!|||I suggest you drink bottle water instead.|||There are plenty of brand. Can't remember them by name, but I drank numerous of them during the three years I lived there, and in the countless visits that I have had during the past 6 years.I would suggest to go to supermarket. They stock brands from reputable manufacturers and are bound to be safer than those sold on street corners.|||buy bottle water from super market onlyi have never been there but with chinese product must be careful|||Wahaha or Watsons are big local brand names, plus a fair few more but too numerous to name.Evian and foreign brandsetc all okMost bottled water, even from street vendors at 1 yuan each is ok, if they charge you anything over 2.5RMB for plain water refuse it and go to the next place as they're pulling a fast one.|||i think in shanghai ...even i tried to boil the water..the taste still strange...Try Watson....
